new credit rules Can a Magnet Really Make Your Credit Card Not Work?
Your credit card will not be readable if the magnets are exposed to? In an earlier story, we said yes, but many of you have asked to depart. You see, that we have the challenge of clearing things once and for all have.

The result: With the help of a magnet scrap yard, a garden-variety refrigerator magnet and a professor with a vast knowledge of magnetism, we have to keep right – eventually.

A controversial debate came to our “How to destroy a card has been” released in September 2009. The people began to weigh whether a magnet – especially those of the refrigerator persuasion – in fact, the power strip had a strip. “Does a magnetic stripe to do anything,” said a commentator in our video on YouTube.com. Others agreed with their own experiences with credit cards and magnets.

So we put the cards on the test against a flood of different magnets, also on the way to the junkyard curved lines with a number of severe electro-magnetic forces.

But before the results, we take a step back.

The mystery of the stripe

Credit card magnetic stripes, more than just your valuable financial information that they carry a secret, too.
The line you see on the back of your card is a collection of magnetic particles – each a tiny magnet with its approximately 20 millionths of a millimeter. It is a general belief that the exposure of these particles can climb to an external magnet, the information and do not take the card read.

That’s the theory. But it really happened? We wanted to know.

Magnets on a mission

Our experiment began with three different magnets of different strengths:

• A generic fridge magnet, similar to those in the company of your child’s artwork in your kitchen.

• A slightly stronger magnet, capable of up to 72 pounds.

• A junkyard magnets that hold about 7,000 pounds and is just fun to see in action.

You never know when you you simply waving your credit card into a junkyard.

We stole three separate cards – all tested and working properly before the attempt, by the way – with one of these types of magnets and then took her to a local dealer who ran each card with a credit card, the test machine is still is readable and what not.

After all preparations had been made, it was time for the big unveiling.

Moment of Truth

Thus, the map was first exposed to the magnet. It turned out that it is readable by a credit card machine. The second, larger magnet was not, despite many digs. We are moving to the big scientific breakthrough we had hoped?

Not so fast. It was set period, the third card, which are a magnet suspended from the scrap yard, to the test – and surprisingly the card was still legible. It had survived the most powerful magnet in our arsenal.

This led to great confusion. Our first assumption was that the strength of the magnet could play a role in the demagnetization process. Thus, a wimpy fridge magnets do not have the data-destroying powers of a giant junkyard magnet.

We were wrong.

Confused, we turned to an expert to answer.

Call The Expert

Entirely from the fact that only one) of three magnets (a medium strength had not read a map made a loss, we sought the guidance of A. Dean Sherry, professor of chemistry at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Sherry Rogers, associate director of the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Center and a radiology professor at the University of Southwestern Medical Center. In other words, he is much given magnetic experience for our purposes.

He listened to us and politely corrected our assumption about the relationship between the strength of the magnet and the power of the data on the track. “The field strength is not so important,” he said. “The magnet should work eventually.”

What was the deciding factor? Exposure time.

“It is well known that magnets erase information on credit lines,” Sherry said. “This is not always the case after exposure. There may be some risks for the card to be disabled, but it will happen someday.”

Huh. So armed with this information, we have decided to repeat the experiment with the refrigerator magnet. We left the magnetic stripe card suspended for a few minutes and took a few digs more for good measure.
Then we took them back into the shop and … Good luck. The stripe card was demagnetized.

Not the only way a card Destroy

The safest, most practical way to destroy your credit card, but it is cut into small pieces with a shredder or scissors.

For additional protection (or if you just want us to experiment replicated very cool), you can use a magnet on the line. Be sure to be suspended for a significant proportion of the time – which is too heavy junkyard magnet as well.
